Pelvic injuries
What Are Pelvis and Acetabular Fractures?
- Pelvis fracture: This is a break in the large bony ring at the base of your spine, which supports your upper body and connects to your legs.
- Acetabular fracture: This is a break in the socket part of your hip joint, where the thigh bone (femur) fits in.
These injuries usually happen due to high-impact accidents like car crashes, falls from height, or sometimes in older adults with weak bones.
Symptoms
- Severe pain in the hip, groin, or lower back
- Difficulty walking or standing
- Swelling or bruising
- In serious cases, internal bleeding or damage to nearby organs
Management (Treatment)
Treatment depends on how bad the fracture is:
1. Mild Fractures (Stable)
- Rest and painkillers
- Limited movement with crutches or walker
- Physical therapy to regain strength
2. Severe Fractures (Unstable or Displaced)
- Surgery may be needed to fix the bones with plates, screws, or rods
- Hospital stay for monitoring and recovery
- Rehabilitation to help with walking and mobility
Recovery Tips
- Follow your doctor’s advice closely
- Don’t rush walking—healing takes time
- Eat calcium-rich foods to support bone healing
- Stay active with safe exercises once cleared
